Becoming a member allows you to volunteer at the Pound, help with our fundraising, participate in events as well as attending our monthly meetings and voting. It's easy to join, simply visit our membership page.

Fostering

Foster carers are the lifeline of our organisation, without these wonderful people we could not rescue the number of animals we do, yet we always need more people to come forward and offer to foster an orphan until a permanent home can be found. Foster caring is a really rewarding thing to do and it doesn’t take much time or effort. Firstly, you must be a financial member of Friends of the Pound and then all you need to provide is a loving home, secure fencing and a few hours of interaction with your foster animal each day.

We can provide you with food and bedding. We pay for all medical costs associated with the foster animal and we also provide you with support at any time you need, about any questions you may have. The most rewarding part of the whole experience has to be the satisfaction you feel when your foster animal finds a new, permanent loving home. Knowing that you have played a big role in getting them that home is a great feeling and one that will stay with you for a lifetime.

To find out more about becoming a dog foster carer, please email our Dog Foster Co-ordinator, Pam (or phone 02 5613 6507 or 0421 017 461).

To find out more about becoming a cat foster carer, please email our Cat Foster Co-ordinator, Sonia (FOP President), or phone her on 07 5590 7284 or 0439 766 243.

Fundraising

Fundraising is one of the key ways in which Friends of the Pound gets the money to rescue abandoned animals from the Tweed Shire Pound. We have various fundraising initiatives being undertaken throughout the year with volunteers always being needed to help us out with such projects. So if you could spare a day or even a couple of hours to promote our wonderful cause and raise much-needed funds then let us know. Alternatively if you have suggestions on fundraising ideas or suggestions on events we can attend to promote our cause then please email Sonia.

Volunteers for Sausage Sizzles

We have sizzles in the Tweed Shire and Murwillumbah area. Our volunteers consist of cooks, money /drink handlers, food serving handlers, towbar person and a sizzle manager. What a great way to spend a day meeting people and volunteering at our sizzles!

Volunteers for Murwillumbah Market Stall
We have our Market Stall at the Murwillumbah Showground Markets on on the fourth Sunday of each month. We need volunteers to help sell our bric-a-brac to bring in much-needed funds for our fur babies!

Volunteers for Raffle Ticket Selling
We are always in need of volunteers to help with the selling of our raffle tickets in the Tweed, Kingscliff and Murwillumbah areas, at allocated locations.

Volunteers for our Special Event Days
We have special event days like the Banana festival, Murwillumbah Show Day, Shopping Centre Promotion Days and more, where we let the people in our community know what role Friends of the Pound play within the community. We sell our Friends of the Pound merchandise, take new memberships, display our current animals that are looking for their 'forever home' and sell tickets in our current raffle.

Public Speaking

Are you interested in public speaking? Would you be interested in helping out with a wonderful cause? Friends of the Pound is looking for volunteers interested in undertaking a public speaking role on behalf of our organisation to venture out to schools and various clubs to speak about our organisation and cause. We can provide you with background information and training all you need to do is have a passion for public speaking and an interest in animal welfare. Rehoming Centre Campaign

In the past Friends of the Pound have talked about having a Rehoming Centre - purchasing land or an existing kennel/cattery and having somewhere for the animals that were being euthanased at the pound to go. Things have changed for the better in the past decade and much of this is because of the hard work of many members of Friends of the Pound. We have had meetings recently to assess our needs and the way we are operating and have come up with a model which we believe works very well in our current situation. This model still needs to go before a general meeting and will be published here if and when approved.

To donate to our rehoming centre fund simply visit our Donations page.

Bequests

Bequests can include real estate, shares, life insurance policies or tangible assets such as jewellery, artwork, motor vehicles, furniture etc. You can also choose to make a conditional bequest, for example, if you are concerned about the welfare of your pet you can make it a condition of your bequest that FOP will find a suitable home for your pet and ensure that they receive any necessary veterinary treatment up to the amount of the bequest, minus costs incurred by FOP in the process of re-homing your pet.
